I'm not sure why this American Avocet is striking such a pose—perhaps it's stretching and preening, practicing a courtship display, or staking its claim in the shallows. With wings stretched high and bent parallel to the water, bird behavior is a beautiful mystery.

James says this guy is practicing a common courtship display.
