This was shot from a public sidewalk on Francis street in Boston. It attracted the attention of a security guard, who told me I could not take photos and demanded my ID. I refused to give it to him, and continued on my way. The guard radioed ahead, and there was another security guard waiting for me down the street. I refused to give him my my ID as well. At this point, the second security guard called a Boston Police officer over. When I asked the officer what law I had broken, he told me that "these are different times" and demanded to see my ID. I cooperated with the officer. He went off to his car and was gone for several minutes. When he came back he told me that I was not breaking any laws, but that I should cooperate with security guards to "avoid suspicion". I again asked him if it was illegal to take photos from a public sidewalk, and he said that it was not illegal. I told the guard that I was happy to abide by their policy when I was on their property, but that it it did not apply to me when on public property. One of the security guards then told me, "It is our policy that no photos are allowed of the hospital, from anywhere. If you take photos, I will stop you". The officer then said "Well there you go." and walked away. During the entire conversation, the officer repeatedly tried to get me to agree that it is "suspicious" to take photos. I always told him that I did not think it was suspicious, and that it was my right, which I take very seriously. It was obvious that the officer supported the actions of the security guards, and in fact after he was done with my ID he handed it to the security guards, who have absolutely no right to that information. I will be contacting both the Boston Children's Hospital and the Harvard Medical School about this incident. Hopefully they will tell their guards to respect the constitutionally guaranteed rights of photographers.

Photography is not a crime.
