When I first saw the name 'Eon' I thought it sounded very hi-tec and futuristic, especially for the 1940s. It turns out that 'Elliots of Newbury' was a long-established furniture maker who, in common with many other companies, were pressed into manufacturing aircraft components during WW2. After the war, they continued in that vein for a while, and manufactured this copy of the German designed Schneider SG-38 Schulgleiter that had been used to train many Luftwaffe pilots during the war! About 80 were built from 1948 by EoN and were marketed to aero clubs. A number were used by the Royal Air Force's Air Training Corps. This one, flown by the redoubtable Graham Saw, is owned by the Shuttleworth Collection and seen here displaying over its home base of Old Warden. It was towed aloft by a powered aircraft, but in use as a very basic trainer, they were often launched with elastic rubber 'bungee' chords and didn't get higher than a few feet off the ground.
