The lifeboat station at Peel was first established 1828. The present boat house dates from 1992 and the adjoining concrete slipway was constructed between 1990-91.
The boat house was built on the site of the original dating from 1885 and provided a greater size required to accommodate the tractor launched Mersey Class Lifeboat RNLB RUBY CLERY which has had over a quarter of a century on station. The lifeboat is named after the great grand daughter of the founder of Royal National Lifeboat Institution Sir William Hillary.

The lifeboat is launched from a carriage hauled by a Talus MB-H tractor designed specifically for the RNLI by Clayton Engineering. Whilst launching of the lifeboat can be completed within a few minutes, recovery is a lengthier process taking about three quarters of an hour.

When I was visiting the lifeboat station the Inshore Lifeboat RNLB Myrtle and Trevor Gurr (D-704) was launched at 15:44 tasked to search for missing 12 year old boy who was last seen at Porthmelgan. A search was carried out from the south end of Whitesands beach to Porthmelgan. While the lifeboat search was being carried out the child was found and reunited with his family.

This sequence shows how the inshore boat is lowered onto the slipway for launching.

The Old Lifeboat Station near Looe Beach is a Grade II listed building.

The original lifeboat station opened in 1866 and closed in 1930. The historic building now trades as a Gallery.

The RNLI reestablished a presence in the town in 1991 initially with the seasonal provision of a lifeboat.

A new station a few yards away was opened in 2002.
