View of the Cistercian Tintern Abbey looking towards the great East Window. This is probably the grandest ruin in the whole of Wales an unfortunate victim of King Henry VIII marital problems with Catherine of Aragon.

Witley Court is probably England's grandest residential ruin. Badly damaged by fire in 1937 and not rebuilt due to under insurance it is a fine example of a 19th Century industrial tycoon's home based on a house dating back to Jacobean times - but much rebuilt and enlarged in Italianate style during the Victorian Period. The impressive Perseus and Andromeda Fountain dates from the Victorian rebuilding. Following the fire the remains were stripped of anything saleable and in the 1960s it was nearly demolished. Fortunately it was taken into state guardianship and is now managed by English Heritage who have undertaken much renovation and conservation work from the 1990s onwards.

The as yet unrestored Flora Fountain on the East Parterre of Witley Court. The East Wing where the 1937 fire began us is in the background, the steps leading up to the ballroom. The concrete braced East Tower can be seen. This acted as a flue for the fire which began in the bakery basement.

View of the Forecourt at Witley Court approached from the carriage drive looking towards the North Portico. It is from here that important guests including King Edward VII would have approached the house.
