On Friday evening, after a typically gorgeous July Vancouver day with streets filled with construction and tourists, I took the tour "Walking the Ruins: Fragments of Vancouver". The tour started at Sinclair Centre and moved towards Gastown. A mix of theatre, poetry, parody, quotations, observation, and contemplation, we were challenged to view and feel the city with new eyes and ears. The observations and reflections were generally quiet ones; discussion among participants and tour guides was hushed and remained very civil (almost as if we're afraid to interrupt the performance!) Particularly profound were various serendipitous interactions we witnessed as we encountered tourists and locals at various parts of the journey. The tourists in the elevator, it seems, were completely unable to see any ruins around them. To them, it was all beautiful. For the Vancouverite, it's a unique opportunity to simultaneously play tourist and arts patron for a day!

From their website: "Invoking the long tradition of drifts and dérives, the walking body becomes a way of knowing, of mapping the city through movement, play, awareness, history, memory and imagination. A historical tour. A fictional performance. A virtual navigation."
