You're in the cab, or just behind it, on this westbound express from Chur to Disentis/Mustér. This video starts east of Versam-Safien and ends with a smooth stop at that station for a meet. Note how quiet the train runs on the perfect track. The train will cross the Verderrhein River and parallel the south side. We rode two of the five steam-powered paddle wheelers on Lake Lucerne, the DS UNTERWALDEN and the STADT LUZERN. Both boats had an area where one could view the immaculate crankshaft and other moving parts of the steam engine. The crown jewel of East Broad Top experience was the machine shop. The structure dates from the 1880s, with an addition added about 1910. For a small railroad, the shop was extensive. Over 200 EBT coal hoppers were built there, as well as other cars.

A steam engine powered overhead line shafts, which operated all the machines on the floor through various pulleys and belts. The system still works today, but it is no longer steam-powered. Compressed air is now used to power the line shafts for demonstration purposes. Video by Joe McMillan.
