Secession Building | Secessionsgebäude

Often referred to simply as Secession, this beautiful building in Vienna by Joseph Olbrich (built 1897-98) is a key work in the Secession style, part of Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil).

I have chosen to translate the inscription a little differently to Wikipedia, thus: "Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit" as "To the age its art, to art its freedom."

In the background are steps to a viewing platform from which one could gaze with a breaking heart into the East. The Wall survived only 15 months beyond this visit. Its 28 years of offence to the human spirit ended in October 1989.
