Terra Cotta Chinese Restaurant, 25-27 Highcross Street, Leicester. I have included the whole of the building as an example of older city centre architecture in a city where old and new are frequently in slightly awkward juxtaposition. There are many gems in Leicester and two appear incidentally in this picture. Behind the 1712 inset on the building to the right, there must be a story and far left can be glimpsed The Old Grammar School now 1573 Grill Restaurant.

One of the first sights which greeted me on my arrival In Leicester in evening sunshine, was the city's oldest building, The Jewry Wall, once part of the Roman baths. St Nicholas Church can be seen behind. In a city, with what might kindly be described as 'mixed architecture', this is an absolute delight.

As the evening sunshine falls upon Leicester, so it illuminates the passage of two millennia. The Jewry Wall (left) is the oldest building in the city and was part of the Roman baths. Across the remains of the baths is the predictable 20th century architecture of the Holiday Inn. The chances of that being there in 2000 years are zero.
