'Deltic'
I always thought the colour scheme unpleasant and the styling, mercifully modified for the production locomotives, avoidably American but how could one not have a soft spot for the prototype of one of the greatest locomotive classes ever? The fact that 6 of a class of only 22 are preserved in addition to this (formerly DP1) speaks for itself. My memories of 1970s Kings Cross are now distant but I can still nearly hear a manoeuvring Deltic.

Apart from the SR emus, this was undoubtedly my favourite exhibit at Locomotion. It is a wonderfully restored and fascinating horse box just dripping with interest. It is numbered S96369 and gold lettering which can just be seen in this image, reads NOT TO WORK BETWEEN TONBRIDGE and BATTLE. This was, presumably, because of the loading gauge on this route on which, you will recall, the specially built Hastings line DMUs of the 60s and 70s had a reduced width. The kind of thing which makes good museums what they are is the label, featured in the next photograph, which explains how this vehicle coped with horses urine!
