Inaugurated in January 4, 1852, it went into service until late 1930s in order to give way to the modern-day Quezon Bridge" The construction was supervised by M. Gabaud, a French engineer.

It was possibly the first suspension bridge in the Far East. It had a single lane in each travel way to allow passage of horse-drawn carriages and a pedestrian island in the middle. The photographic record shows that the bridge was wood construction with plant fiber (hemp rope) suspensions lines. The written record contradicts this. “The bridge materials were imported from England by Matia Menchacatorre y Cia, a Spanish company, in joint venture with Ayala y Cia, a local company?”… I ask why wood beams and hemp rope would be imported to the Philippines from England since the Philippines had vast low cost supplies of both? Something is amiss here. Personally I am convinced that the bridge supported by the photographic record made of wood and plant fiber.

This was a daguerreotype process photograph.
The daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic process (1839-1860) in the history of photography. Named after the inventor, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, each daguerreotype is a unique image on a silvered copper plate.

It was where the First Philippine Assembly was inaugurated on Oct. 16, 1907. It paved the way for the country’s independence from American rule as it provided a way for the Filipino legislators to participate in local political affairs… These are all men. Were woman not allow to participate?

Manila Grand Opera House was a theater and opera house located in the Santa Cruz district at the intersection of Rizal Avenue and Doroteo Jose Street. It has a lot of Manila history starting with the Spanish in the mid-1800s
