By ring-road 1 in the south driving east you will see on your right hand side two crashed cars and a sign below them. The sign says: "... látnir á árinu. Eru beltin spennt?". This means: "... have died this year. Have you buckled up?." If it says "Enginn... látnir á árinu" it means "Nobody has died this year".
Each time there is a fatal car accident here in Iceland they change the number. The person, whose job it is so go up there and change the number, says it is a very sad job - understandably :(
So please buckle up while driving in Iceland - it is the law and has saved a lot of lives.
