We took boats across the Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine to reach the Grinnell Glacier trailhead. After about a 1.5 mile hike we were treated with this view of the Grinnell Lake. The trail to the glacier was closed just beyond this point because of snow. The turquoise color of this and other glacial lakes is thought to be due to ground up minerals called "rock flour." The fine particles of rock generated by glacial erosion are suspended in the water and support a large population of algae.

The hike was through prime Grizzly Bear habitat. There were a number of piles of bear scat on the trail. The guide said not to worry since there was no steam rising from the scat! ;-)
