On our way to The Wave we stopped at Bryce. During the night we got 6 inches of new snow. I was excited to look out the next morning and see stars and a clear sky. In my enthusiasm I was the the first one to Sunrise point blazing a trail through knee deep snow. Eventually there were 4 photographers enjoying the beautiful sight.

As we near the end of 2008 I am reminded of a memorable trip we took to "The Wave" on the Utah-Arizona border last February. Even though it's clear in the east, there were clouds in the west blocking the direct sun for most of our time here. In this view the sun finally peeked through for more definition of this unique and wonderful geography.

This is a view of the Colorado River just east of Moab, Utah. The red cliffs on the left of the image mark the southern boundary of Arches National Park.

It is always fun to photograph sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. You are usually standing shoulder to shoulder with photographers from all over the world trying to catch the light through this relatively narrow slit. Everyone sets up and talks a bit and then when the sun rises the shutters start clicking in a mad frenzy during the brief moments sublime illumination.

This is a predawn shot from Dead Horse Point near Canyonlands National Park taken 30 minutes before sunrise. The colors and tones were so naturally beautiful I didn't have the heart to disturb them with hdr. ;-)
