Spiral Jetty, an earthwork sculpture on the north end of the Great Salt Lake, is seen from an altitude of about 150 feet shot using a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter.

Constructed in April 1970, the Spiral Jetty is considered to be the central work of American sculptor Robert Smithson.

Built on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake near Rozel Point in Utah entirely of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks and water, Spiral Jetty forms a 1,500-foot-long (460 m), 15-foot-wide (4.6 m) counterclockwise coil jutting from the shore of the lake. The water level of the lake varies with precipitation in the mountains surrounding the area, revealing the jetty in times of drought and submerging it during times of normal precipitation. - Wikipedia

The Statue of the Angle Moroni stands atop the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. This blue hour shot was taken with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter ( altitude - 154 ft. ) with permission. The Snake River and lights of Idaho Falls are seen in the background.

The statue represents the return to earth of an angel bearing the gospel...

"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people"
Revelations 14:6

I decided to use the Phantom to try to get a straight on view of Upper Mesa Falls which is normally only seen from the side. The way the canyon curves at the falls it is really not possible to see the entire falls from the view points. It was a bit tricky to fly here since the quad needs GPS for stable flight and this being down in a canyon it took a while to obtain the 6 satellites needed. When I would fly toward the far wall I would lose satellites and fearing it would be more difficult to control I would edge back to the center of the canyon.

Landing was also a bit tricky since there are only small platforms to put down on and GPS signal was also weaker on the near side of the canyon as well. In the end it worked out OK and I am more convinced than ever that a drone can let us see and photograph things in entirely new perspectives. If only we could use them in the National Parks!
