The changeable weather in Antarctica was evident as the mid-day snow cleared for a beautiful sunset as we approached Deception Island and the amazing chinstrap penguin colony just ahead and to the right (see the close up image).

Morning light streams through the broken cloud floor over Cornwallis Island which seems to float above the water. Clarence Island in the background and Elephant Island out of frame on the right, all part of the North Shetland Islands.

Interestingly, Cornwallis Island does not show up on any of the maps I have access to including Google Maps. When I switch to Earth and satellite images, there is clearly an Island there where I thought I took the picture.

Having passed by Elephant Island, heading south to King George Island, the ever changing weather clearing, we encountered our first iceberg in open water.

I had no idea how massive this thing was until our Captain decided approach and do a 360 loop before continuing on. It was at least 10 stories high and a city block around. And to think that 3/4s of the mass is below the water!

The water was so smooth in Paradise Bay that it was easy to spot whales and other wildlife in the water. There were at least 3 pair of Humpback Whales in the bay and it was a real treat when they would pass the ship showing their grace and power as they effortlessly moved by.
