Anticline - folded siliciclastic sedimentary rocks of the lower Llewellyn Formation, Middle Pennsylvanian
Anticlines are uparched folds. They are common in mountains belts such as the Appalachians in eastern America. The folded rocks seen here at this Pennsylvania coal mine are siliciclastic sedimentary rocks of the lower Llewellyn Formation, which also has economically significant coal horizons. The mined-out coal at this locality was subanthracite.
Locality: Bear Valley Coal Mine, southeast of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, USA
