Downstream is to the left.

The rocks in the creek cut are part of the Ohio Shale (Upper Devonian), a thick succession of black shales deposited on an ancient seafloor under anoxic conditions. In central Ohio, the Ohio Shale is about 600 feet thick. In eastern Ohio, the unit is subsurface and thickens to about 2000 feet.

The light-colored boulders in the creek are glacial erratics derived from Canada and delivered to Ohio during the Pleistocene Ice Age.
