Fusulinid limestone in the Pennsylvanian of New Mexico, USA.
This fossiliferous limestone is dominated by fusulinids, an extinct group of unicellular, marine benthic organisms (Protista, Granuloreticulosa, Foraminifera, Fusulinina). They had relatively large, elongated, rice-like, microgranular, calcareous skeletons (tests). Fusulinids were widespread in Late Paleozoic shallow epicontinental seas.
Stratigraphy: Holder Formation, Virgillian Stage, upper Upper Pennsylvanian
Locality: northern side of Rt. 82, just south of and downhill from thick reef facies, northern side of Dry Canyon, northeast of the town of Alamogordo & southeast of the town of La Luz, north-central Otero County, southern New Mexico, USA (vicinity of 32° 57' 17.9" North latitude, 105° 54' 59.1" West longitude)
