At 7:57 AM, local time, on 14 January 2024, a fissure eruption started in southwestern Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, just northeast of the town of Grindavik. The fissure quickly lengthened and basaltic lava flows spread in multiple directions, including toward Grindavik.

Update: the eruption ceased very early in the morning on Tuesday, 16 January 2024.
