At 11:14 PM, local time, on 20 November 2024, a fissure eruption started in southwestern Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. It was preceded by a relatively minor earthquake swarm. The active fissure lengthened to about three kilometers and basaltic lava flows spread out in multiple directions. Eruption energy peaked and started waning about three hours later.
