This is a north-bound, Norfolk Southern loaded coal drag at Marion, Ohio during the afternoon of 9 May 2015. The train was headed by two engines: Norfolk Southern Railway # 9650, and Norfolk Southern Railway # 9961.
The lead unit, Norfolk Southern # 9650, was built as a General Electric CW40-9 diesel locomotive. It has been since been upgraded to a CW44-9.
The second unit, Norfolk Southern # 9961, was also built as a CW40-9, back in December 2004. It has also been upgraded to a CW44-9.

This is a coal-burning, Heisler-type, geared steam locomotive that pulls modern tourist trains for the Cass Scenic Railroad and the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad in West Virginia, USA. The engine was built in 1929 and initially used as Meadow River Railroad # 6. It is seen here waiting to push a tourist passenger train in Durbin, West Virginia in May 2016.
Heisler-type locomotives had a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders that rotated a centrally-located, longitudinal drive shaft just beneath the engine.
