---------------------
This is my colleague, geology professor Daniel Leavell. He taught undergraduate geology at the Newark campus of Ohio State University for many years and retired in spring 2016. He died unexpectedly while asleep at home on 18 June 2017 in Granville, Ohio. He was 66 years old.

Dan focused on several areas of geology, including metamorphism, structural geology, economic geology, and environmental geology. His Ph.D. research topic at the University of Massachusetts was josephinite, a rare rock from Oregon that is dominated by iron-nickel metal (see: www.jsjgeology.net/Josephinite.htm
and www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/14956950047). His most recent research interests included local and global water resource issues.

While at OSU-Newark, Dan taught introductory geology, national parks geology, physical geology, environmental geology, and economic geology. Some of his field work in recent years included visits to the Andes of South America and the Himalayas in northern India.

David Eugene St. John, age 52, was born in Newark, Ohio on August 24, 1971, and died on December 6, 2023. He is survived by his parents, Lee and Mary Ellen St. John; brother, James St. John; cousins, Beth Warren and Martha Pyles Meikle.

He was educated at Newark High School and attended Hocking College for a time. While in Newark he was a member of Christ United Methodist church.

David was a gifted salesman with a great sense of humor. He moved from Newark to Pittsburgh where he worked selling sports memorabilia. He has many friends, who have gathered around him and the family in his last days.

A loyal friend with a big heart he was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, loving photography, bird watching, fishing, and bow hunting. His photographs of scenery, sunsets, animals and flowers are many and beautiful.
