These remnants of an old ferry dock are visible from the Titlow Beach in the west side of Tacoma, Washington near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Looking from this angle, the letters installed on the pilings look strange. When viewed from the beachside boardwalk though, they clearly read “Tacoma.”
Aaron R. Titlow, a lawyer, was the namesake developer of this area of Tacoma. Originally from Ohio, Titlow came to Washington in 1888. In 1911 he built the Hotel Hesperides, a portion of which remains today as the community center at Titlow Park. During 1960s, when octopus wrestling was popular in the Western United States, championship events were held at the Titlow Beach.

I wanted to capture the reflection of Whitby Abbey in the due pond on a sunny autumn day. I was happy that the pond was quite shielded from the wind on the hill, so it gave a great mirror surface.
