This view of Saint Peters from Via della Conciliazione became possible after controversial "urban renewal" begun by Mussolini, but completed after his death.
The boulevard allows this view of Saint Peters, but still obscures most of the Vatican buildings per Gian Lorenzo Bernini's intentions.
The basilica (and specifically the high altar) sits over the burial site of Saint Peter, the first Pope and Bishop of Rome. Construction of the current building began in 1506 and was completed 120 years later in 1626.
