Statues of the Four Heavenly Guardians/Kings are almost always present in a Chinese Buddhist temple. Each Guardian stands watch over one of the compass directions.
Duōwén Tiānwáng (多闻天王) is identifiable by the umbrella that he holds. He is the leader of the Four Heavenly Guardians, and guards the North. In the background is Guăngmù Tiānwáng, the Guardian of the West.
Statues of the Four Heavenly Guardians always look fierce. Traditionally, they are placed inside a temple to protect against evil spirits/demons, and also serve as a warning to would-be human robbers.
