View of the 'Royal Crescent' from Royal Crescent green.

Laid out as a sweeping 500 feet long crescent are 30 Georgian styled terraced houses designed by John Wood and built between 1767 and 1774. There are 114 Ionic columns on the Palladian influence facade.

Together with the nearby 'Circus' houses, they are said to be among the best examples of Georgian architecture in Britain.

The Circus (aka King's Circus) is a group of historic townhouses Bath. They are laid out to form a circle with three entrances and a lawn with trees at the centre.

They were designed by John Wood and built between 1754 and 1768. Together with the nearby 'Royal Crescent' houses, they are said to be among the best examples of Georgian architecture in Britain.

The central tower of Bath Abbey is slightly unusual, its has a oblong/rectangular rather than a square plan.

This is the Gothic style west façade of the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Much of it dates from the work of a 16th Century restoration.

Above the large west window is a sculpture of a Seated Christ (a late 19th Century replacement) among a Choir of Angels. More Angels, climbing stone ladders, are on either side. This is a depiction of the story of Jacob's Ladder from the bible.

On each side of the two ladders are twelve statues. They are the Virgin Mary, ten of the Twelve Apostles, and St. John the Baptist. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul (for whom the Abbey is dedicated and has been named for) flank the carved wooden great west door.

Angels climbing stone ladders on the West facade of Bath Abbey.

One story is that Bishop Oliver King who had supervised the 16th Century restoration of the Abbey had a dream where he saw Angels ascending and descending a ladder. This is said to have lead to this depiction of Jacob's Ladder.

On each side of the ladder are twelve statues. They are the Virgin Mary, ten of the Twelve Apostles, and St. John the Baptist. Statues of two other Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul, flank the west door.
