GAS still strong. Internal struggles over the next acquisition in the list. Finally, succumbed to this setup. When the sum worked out to be less than the cheapest MD 85mm f2 I can find (SGD299), execution was swift. In a week, camera, batteries and lens acquired.

So here goes the rationale. This seems to be final part or missing piece to complete the whole film shooting journey. And it nicely connects back to EF lens that I had started with when first using dSLR. These automated features of SLR are something that I haven’t used before. Though it’s a sure quick way to burn money by making silver faster. It’s a kind of experience that I have not gone through before.

Probably, it’s fate that I won’t be a Nikon user. I started off in University with FE10 and I believe 50mm lens. Should be a manual setup but with electronic feature such as light meter, Av and Tv. Couldn’t carry on then as it proved to be an unsustainable hobby for a student like me. Then, point and shoot filled the gap during travelling years as young working adult. Would go trade show once in 2-3 years to upsize the megapixels by getting the always reliable IXUS. There’s once I switched to Coolpix. After first blur night shots, the camera went straight to storage and later bin. Tried Sony and Panasonic ones but IXUS still stood out. Fujifilm S6500fd (after using FinePix PnS which surprisingly worked when I encountered snow first time in Kyoto. It’s only camera working then) was the most advanced model I had got during those times. It was until I acquired a used Rebel XTi with the nifty fifty. There’s no turning back.

By 2021, Canon had produced 150 million RF and mostly EF lens (Nikon has more than 100 million too). If average price for 1 such lens is $500, you could imagine how significant is this range to Canon. It’s an important part of camera and lens history as well. It feels like homecoming and glad to be back. Of course, EF lens can also be used for digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, so can still save some costs in the long run.

So far, loaded the first roll of 24 exp Ultramax (expensive roll but might be better use for trying out new cameras). I wanted a different cheap 50mm, so I went for STM version which I had not used before. It turned out that there’s an issue in the final shutter press. Only when I switch to manual the shutter can be completed. Not sure if it’s due to the electronics already built in. I tested the lens with the M100 before buying. Everything was working fine. Anyway, another adventure has just started.
