Candler Mountain (along with Catoctin Mountain, Bull Run Mountain and Southwest Mountain) is part of the discontinuous southeastern ridge of the Blue Ridge Anticlinorium.

While geologically similar to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains (which run parallel to Candler Mountain, some 20 miles to the northwest), geographers consider Candler Mountain a monadnock, and place it within Virginia's Piedmont Province.
