There are twelve crosses and one marker with the Star of David marking the places where thirteen firefighters lost their lives in Mann Gulch, August 5,1949. The smoke jumpers were dropped at 4:10 pm, they gathered their equipment and started toward the fire at 5:00, at 5:45 they saw the fire had jumped into their gulch and was coming at them so they turned to run, being told to drop their equipment along the way. By 5:56 the fire had swept over them. Two made it over the top and to the safety of a rock slide and one started a fire and ran into the burned over area and survived. It's a sobering experience to walk over the same ground where these men were running for their lives.

We had a gorgeous day for skiing today - cold and sunny. We had to break trail for most of the way so we were hungry...

We took a drive in the mountains tonight and got to see this great sunset. I imagine the original inhabitants enjoyed the sunsets about as much as I do.

We moved cows from the home place to pasture several miles away today. Sometimes we trail them there but this time we trucked them. It works well that a couple of neighbors have semi trucks - they earn some extra money and the ranch gets the cows to pasture in a lot less time.
