Southend Pier is the longest public pier in the world and served by a fully-fledged public railway. It stretches 1.33 miles out into the estuary of the River Thames was constructed in 1871 to allow shipping to call at Southend in deep water, as the Essex foreshore is very shallow mud for up to a mile out to sea.
