Braintree District Museum in Essex is home to the Warner & Sons silk weaving archive. It includes these splendid examples from the birth of the Art Deco movement.

Warners' patented three-layer velvet was exhibited first in 1910 and on their stand at the 1924 British Empire Exhibition and then again at the International Exhibition of Modern Industrial & Decorative Arts in Paris during 1925.

The Paris expo is widely seen as the birthplace of the Art Deco movement and Warners designer Albert Swindells used what he had seen to create the wonderful Excelsior fabric design which was extensively deployed in Art Deco furnishings of subsequent years.

Commissions soon followed, including from Cunard White Star Line for fabrics to be used on the RMS Queen Mary - launched in 1936.

Braintree District Museum in Essex is home to the Warner & Sons silk weaving archive. It includes these splendid examples.

The Olympus design was printed directly onto linen and designed by Edward Bawden, one of the famous Bardfield Artists and a contemporary of Eric Ravillious. Its bold modern print was too much for Warners traditional upper-class clients and it was not a commercial success. The design is reminiscent of book covers and prints made synchronously by the Bardfield Artist group around this time.
