The bizarre rock formations in this region were formed 30 million years ago by three volcanoes, which dumped tons of ash and mud all over the region. This compacted itself into the special soft rock, which the weather eroded into fantastic shapes and the locals dug out as caves for storage.
You can can still live in a rock cave today.
While in Goreme, I stayed at the Goreme House, a rock cave hotel with an indoor jacuzzi tub.
