Chaparrí Lodge, Chaparrí Private Conservation Area, Lambayeque, Peru.

Well, we're back from our holiday in Peru - what a fantastic country! Over the coming weeks I'll be gradually adding photos from our trip. I'm starting with photos from the second part of our trip, northern Peru. This is an area very much off the "gringo trail" where westerners are far more scarce than the numerous endemic bird species. We had a fantastic guide for the entire 30-odd days - Rudy Gelis, an ex-pat American based in Quito, Ecuador. If you're visiting Peru (or Ecuador) we can highly recommend Rudy - his Website is Pluma Verde Tours, www.plumaverdetours.com/.

This species is a Peru Endemic, but is listed as Critically Endangered because it has an extremely small population (perhaps <250 individuals) with a severely fragmented distribution. It has been successfully re-introduced to the Chaparrí Private Conservation Area and is quite common around (and in!) the Chaparrí Lodge. We saw many of these large, charismatic birds - they even raid the luncheon table if they get a chance! It's nice to see a success story first-hand.

More info on this Critically Endangered species can be found on the IUCN Red List website at www.iucnredlist.org/details/141159/0.

Arbol Millenary Reserve, via Chiclayo, Peru.

Also known as the Pacific Hornero, we saw this species many times between the western coast and the dry Marañón Valley in the eastern Andes, below about 2100m elevation. It belongs to the Ovenbird family (Furnariidae) which gets its common name from the nests that Horneros create - large, clay/mud enclosed oven-shaped constructions.

One of many Tyrant Flycatchers in Peru (there's hundreds of them!!). This one spends it's time on or near the ground gleaning insects, and is fairly common on the coast and in the dry Marañón Valley in the eastern Andes, up to about 1200m elevation. We saw this species several times.

Unfortunately, missing the long-tailed bit! These birds were quite common almost wherever we went, so although easily overlooked, they are quite a nice looking bird.

These birds are apparently quite uncommon - we only saw them this once, but there were about 20 in the group! They inhabit desert scrub and agricultural lands of coastal lowlands and are mostly nocturnal, so we were lucky to find them.
