Marysville is sort of a ghost town about 20 miles north of Helena. Since a ski slope was developed on a hill above the town and since it is close enough to Helena to act as a suburb, Marysville currently has about 80 year round residents, a lot fewer than the over 3,000 it had in it's mining heyday. There is still a little mining going on in the area so this truck might still be in occasional use. Or it might be a relic of an earlier era.

The town of Marysville was established in 1876 as a result of gold being found in the area few years previously. At it's peak the town had over 3,000 residents; currently less than 80 reside here. Located about 20 miles from Helena, the town once rivaled Helena in population and wealth. The house behind the vintage vehicle on the right was donated to the Marysville Pioneer Assoction in 1969. It has been restored and is used as a museum although it was closed during our visit. The space in the center of the image was where the railroad changed directions. Train service here discontinued in the 1920's. The ruins on the hill behind Wilbur are abandoned miners cabins.

Silver City was another thriving town near Helena that was founded to support silver mines. We couldn't find any remains of Silver City, even this bar which traded on the name, did not survive. I guess the bar is the ghost of a ghost town.
