At the University of California Channel Islands campus, it appears the flames came right up to the edge. All around the campus that I could see, the hills were black and everything was burned right to the very edge of the campus, evident here by the green grass and unburned sycamore trees and the black burned hillsides beyond.

An island of flowering green plants survives completely surrounded by burned ground with scorched hillsides beyond. The road on the right side of the frame is the entrance back to the University Glen Apartments. The road is burned all around but it appeared the buildings all survived.

With full containment of the Springs Fire expected by tomorrow, I found my spirits uplifted by seeing that this landscape has not been scorched. One finger of the fire line at least reached just beyond the rocky ridge line here in the Santa Monica Mountains, and some of my favorite hiking is in these parts. After losing some really beloved trails to the "Station Fire" in the San Gabriel Mountains back in 2009, I was fearful that this section had burned. Thanks to the efforts of firefighters and some very fortunate changes in the weather, this landscape is unburned for now. Next time I hike here I will appreciate the green views much more!

A scorched call box and downed road sign are next to the burned landscape near Pt. Mugu State Park's entrance off of the PCH.

Point Mugu Stat Park's entrance sign still stands, though the surface has bubbled from heat from when the flames of the Springs Fire made their way through the area over the last few days. The entire landscape beyond the sign is scorched, though little islands of green have survived it seems. The are will recover, but it will be some time. The efforts of firefighters no doubt saved this sign from total loss.
