The Sun is coming up at Fonts Point in the badlands of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. This park is the largest in California, covering more than 915 square miles of desert near the Salton Sea. In the distance you can see the sliver of that sea beneath the red, yellow, orange, pink and purple of the clouds. In the foreground the terrain drops more than 250 feet down to the winding wash below with some spectacularly eroded terrain. I wanted to visit this spot for many years and finally made it there. The views here at Fonts Point did not disappoint. This is a blend of multiple exposures to account for the enormous dynamic range of the scene.

With a superbloom happening elsewhere in the park, patches of green have sprouted to lend an additional hue to the surprisingly colorful badlands as seen from Fonts Point in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The soft, gentle light of the twilight with a Sun that has set behind the mountains to the west also helps bring out the colors. Right in front of the camera, a dramatic steep bowl of eroded shapes cuts down hundreds of feet to the washes below. Badlands like these may not make for the best land for growing plants but they can be visually quite stunning, as this place is.

Soft twilight light reveals the hues of the badlands in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California. A particularly wet winter brought accents of green throughout the landscape in this view from 2017. This was my first time exploring this area, and I have been itching to go back. Especially since I have grown so fond of badlands, which I view as anything but bad.
