The problem with photographing a national landmark like Durdle Door is that it's difficult to present anything new unless one is lucky enough to shoot it at sunrise or sunset. This was taken at 8:30ish AM and the light was already quite harsh so that gift of good light wasn't available to me. Here I've tried to process the image to make more of the clouds than the stone arch itself. Shot with a wide angle lens at a full frame equivalent of 22mm so fairly wide which always helps to accentuate a sky.

Continuing with the monochrome theme for this series of pictures from the south coast of England in Dorset: these stairs lead down to a small beach with views to the east. However, at the very top of the stairs (very top right) you can also drop down to the far side using another set of stairs which will take you down to a much larger, longer beach and close up views of Durdle Door, a natural arch cut through eroded sandstone. I'll post a picture of Durdle Door in due course. If you can't wait to see what Durdle Door looks like then follow the link below:

I really liked the idea of people attaching their love padlocks to this barb wire fence which was a long way from anywhere and could only be reached by walking there. It was unexpected and I have to say quite charming when I saw it.
I've been processing the set of pictures I took on the Dorset coast a few weeks ago, around Lulworth Cove, and I keep coming back to B&W with them. So I might only post monochrome shots from that set. I'm not finished processing yet so there may yet be one or two that work better in colour but this one definitely worked better in B&W.

A little further along this coastline is a much photographed landmark rock formation called Durdle Door, where erosion has carved a large circular hole through an outlying rock formation. Here on the coast at West Lulworth is another less celebrated example of those forces of erosion called Stair Hole.
A quick google gives this description of the location:
"Small tidal pool with rock arches, pillars & caves formed by water erosion on limestone rock."
That's a good summary of what it is but it doesn't describe the amazing stratification found in these limestone cliffs that make up the jurassic coast in this part of Dorset. It's stunning.

I have been missing from Flickr for much of the last 8 or 9 days. One reason for that was that I was away in the middle of that time for 3 days to the county of Dorset that sits on the south coast of England for a little rest and relaxation and golf. Before meeting my friends for golf on the first day I drove down to the little hamlet of West Lulworth which sits on Lulworth Cove, a beautiful almost circular natural cove that is a summer seaside destination for many. From West Lulworth it's possible to climb up the bluff that overlooks the actual cove to enjoy some fantastic views. This view however is in the opposite direction, looking west toward Weymouth and the Isle of Portland. It worked best in B&W as the light was quite harsh at that time of the morning (around 8am).
