Clerkenwell was named after the Clerk's Well which is in Farringdon Road. The area was renowned for its clockmakers, watchmakers, jewellers and repairers. To the right is St. John's Gate - restored in the 19th century and built originally in 1504 as the south entrance to the inner precinct of the Priory of St. John, the Knights Hospitallers. It has been used as a tavern and Victorian commercial premises before reverting to the Order of St. John in the 1870s.
