Constructed in 1875, the brainchild of the Earl of Shaftesbury whose charity, The Cabman's Shelter Fund, allowed the drivers of Hackney carriages and Hansom cabs to get a hot meal - as they were not permitted to leave their cabs when parked at a stand. Between 1875 and 1914, 61 shelters across London were constructed. Thirteen of these shelters exist today and all are Grade II Listed. This is one of them on the Brompton Road. The Rembrandt Hotel was built in the Edwardian period.
