The former stannery town of Ashburton in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor. In 1603 Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested at the Exeter Inn and taken to the Tower of London where he remained for 13 years, where because of his status he had comfortable lodgings.

The Cabell Family Tomb, particularly that of Squire Richard Cabell, who died in 1677, stands opposite the entrance to Holy Trinity Church and is enclosed by it's own secure building. The casket is also held fast by a giant white slab. Legend has it that the villagers made sure his tomb was secure as on the night of his internment, a phantom pack of hounds came from across Dartmoor to bay at his tomb. I read that below the tomb is a system of caves and a stalagnite formation of a little man lies directly below the tomb.

Rumours that Squire Cabell may have murdered his wife may be exagerrated as parish records seem to confirm she outlived him. Whatever the truth of the matter, the stories caught the attention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who visited Dartmoor and went on to write the Hound of the Baskervilles.

The interior, now a shell, after two fires, one in 1849 and the second in 1992, destroyed much of this beautiful church.

On the edge of Dartmoor, this is the pretty former stannary town of Ashburton.
