Two adventurous sisters slept here, the Parminters. They designed their own 16 sided house near Exmouth from ideas gained whilst on their travels abroad. I was told whilst abroad they enjoyed climbing mountains, no doubt in their long, Victorian dresses.

Compton Castle's most famous inhabitant was Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539–1583), coloniser of Newfoundland and half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. It is a medieval fortified manor house run by the National Trust, the front was added by John Gilbert in 1520 and the Gilbert family still live there today.
