A couple of local boys wait at the crossing gates in Quay Street Ammanford while 08995 'Kidwelly' moves a set of HAA hopper wagons from nearby Pantyffynon Yard for loading at Bettws drift mine. The single platform of the long-closed Ammanford station is visible beyond the signal box.
Opened by the Llanelli Railway and Dock Company in April 1840, the station at Ammanford (originally named Cross Inn) was the first station on the Garnant Branch from Pantyffynnon that was built to access the important coal deposits along the Amman Valley. The passenger services to Brynamman were withdrawn in August 1958 and the Glanamman goods traffic ceased in January 1965.

Recorded passing one of the Great Northern somersault signals at Havenhouse in late June 1985, BR Class 31/1 31306 was about to cross Croft Marsh Lane with the 13:30 Skegness to Leeds.
This is the colour version of a mono image given an outing some six years ago. If only I had a Tardis to enable me to have some Summer Saturdays back then with a digital to hand?

BR 40122 was recorded arriving at Rhyl with what appeared to be a single-jib crane, with a Civil Engineer's mess van [ex-brake] and a standard BR 20T brake van. The Class 40 had arrived in North Wales having worked the summer-dated 1D32 08:20 Stoke to Llandudno. Having moved this Deparmental train to Rhyl, the locomotive would collect a train of empty ballast hoppers for delivery to Penmaenmawr and then return the loaded hoppers to Llandudno Junction. It would later work the 1K38 18:15 Llandudno to Stoke.
