We don't go to the races very often, although last year you might recall I documented Launceston Cup Day. www.flickr.com/photos/183221334@N02/albums/72157716567602002
But since the Mowbray Racecourse is not far from where we live, and we'd heard that Tasmania's best current racehorse "Mystic Journey" was running in Race 6 - her first race back after a spell - it was a perfect opportunity to enjoy a beautiful evening.
With this shot I was struck by the golden reflection on the side of the grandstand and how it matched the amber fluid in this beer commercial.

Inside the old grandstand the Launceston Greyhound Club has its headquarters. Unlike its equine counterparts, greyhound racing in Tasmania is very much a part-time interest. It provides ordinary people with an opportunity to participate in racing at a fraction of the cost. In recent years a great deal has been achieved in raising the level of welfare for the dogs in this sport.
I was struck by the light in this composition. The natural sunlight through the window was illuminating the colourful display and shining particularly on those sparkling trophies in the cabinet.

This beautiful historic grandstand was inaugurated on February 6, 1915 (barely months before Australians were fighting and dying at Gallipoli) and designed by Harold Masters. The link here is to a library shot from its very first day.

The basic structure remains the same, but a complete renovation in 1991 has introduced a great deal of comfort for the members of the Tasmanian Turf Club.
The Tasmanian Turf Club has its headquarters here at the Mowbray Racing Centre.

In this shot black and white provided a great opportunity to study the way the light from the setting sun illuminated parts of the image. Note especially up on the Members' Lounge.

As preparations for Race 5 begin the strappers start to bring out the stars of the show. In the mounting yard people get a chance to check out the condition of the horses and their temperament before the race. The sunset light bathed the yard as the shadows grew longer. The shadow of the front horse comes from the spotlights just starting to take effect. The sun's shadows are from the other direction.

This horse gets a little testy in the mounting yard as you can see by its movement. But the skillful strapper (an expert horse handler, if not whisperer) simply takes a few dance steps and gets the horse under control. It will now be ready to take its jockey on board. The man in the orange vest has all his tools ready to clean up the horses' "mess" in the yard before preparations for the next race.
