For several months I encountered a particular Sow and her 2 cubs on a regular basis in a designated wilderness area of the Central District but she always took off running with them as soon as she saw me. Then one evening I think she finally realized that I was not a threat and allowed me to get close enough for a few photographs. However, one of the two cubs was not as curious about me so it stayed behind thick vegetation most of the time.

Black Bear Cub - Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
“It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.” -- Albert Einstein
One from my archives (2009). For several weeks I encountered a particular Sow and her 2 cubs on a regular basis in a designated wilderness area of the Central District but she always took off running with them as soon as she saw me. Then one evening I think she finally realized that I was not a threat and allowed me to get close enough for a few photographs. However, one of the two cubs was not as curious about me so it stayed behind thick vegetation most of the time, but the other one was quite the 'Curious George' so-to-speak.
I didn't quite get the focus I wanted on this one, the little one made me a bit nervous while shooting this particular photo as it approached me more rapidly than I expected it to. Yes, those claws and teeth even at this age can deliver a major butt whippin'!

I had a wonderful opportunity when I came across 3 very small cubs on my birthday this past Monday. Soooooo cute! This one went up the side of a tree that was facing me, while its siblings chose to go up an adjacent tree. He/She was staring at them like "hey I thought we were a team!"
THANKS FOR VIEWING!

There are still quite a few Black Bears out fattening up for their dens. Acorn and Hickory crops were very good on most SNP ridges in 2016.

Fattening Up For Winter. The Black Bears @ Shenandoah National Park are in hyperphagia mode now. Now is a good time to catch them out in the open feeding on fallen acorns or up in oak trees.
Hyperphagia is a period of excessive eating to fatten up for their winter denning..
I didn't quite get the focus I wanted w/ my old & slow 70-300mm (f/5.6)
THANKS FOR VIEWING!
