La strada coperta rappresenta un manufatto unico in tutta l’architettura castellana europea. Fu fatta costruire a partire dal 1347 da Luchino Visconti.

La sua realizzazione come ponte fortificato, rispondeva a uno scopo ben preciso: proteggere il passaggio dei Signori di Milano e unire con un accesso sicuro, il Castello con la Rocca Vecchia.
