Each nearly round blade was ~4.75" (12cm) in diameter, the one at left barely torn.
This was a beached specimen found at
Montana de Oro State Park,
San Luis Obispo Co., California

This is one of the Red Algae. See also adjacent photo for another view. And to get a better idea of the reason for the name, see this photo of a new blade: www.flickr.com/photos/marlinharms/5745327884/

Estero Bluffs State Park,
San Luis Obispo Co., California

I have kneeled on it previously and won't forget it--those spines are sharp. Very small flowers form within those spiny structures earlier in the year when the spines are green. As the flower forms into seeds, those spiny parts harden and I'm sure aid in seed dispersal to some degree.

The flower is from my yard near the ocean. But the seedpod and seeds are courtesy of my friend Jody who lives inland just far enough so that her plants form seedpods, which mine on the coast do not. It takes a village. Thanks, Jody.
