Dryocopus pileatus,
Kanuga Lake,
Western North Carolina

Early on our first morning in NC, while I was staring at a new-to-me flower, this woodpecker flew to this nearby stump, banged at a few spots, then stood still before flying off.

Along a stream,
Maggie Valley,
Western North Carolina

This small shrub was very reminiscent of Western Azalea, Rhododendron occidentale, which I am familiar with in California. Only, of course, much more pink.
