We had been walking around Ghost Ranch for a little bit to see what we could find. It turned out, not much. The light wasn't good so we decided to leave, but on our way out we saw all their horses out in the corral. And lo and behold, the sun came out and we started to fire away. Unfortunately for us as photographers we couldn't really get close to the horse corral because it was well fenced off. On the other hand it gave us this wide perspective, which is quite nice.

On my first day of visiting the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument we hiked up the Escalante river which required numerous river crossing. So shoes off, socks off, socks on, shoes on and so forth. I didn't know to bring sandals that were designed to get wet. Well, next time. This is the only shot I got of the arch because it was right after taking it that I realized that I had lost my cell phone. My friend Greg had recorded our path on GPS so we backtracked but still could not find it. It was a beautiful hike though but on the trek back to the car I was entirely preoccupied with finding my phone instead of enjoying the landscape.

This is a composite of a lightning storm I shot in August of last year.
I had the camera set to a series of automatic exposures and, as luck would have it, I captured a bunch of lightning strikes in quick succession after many shots with just the cloud. It basically meant that the storm was gaining strength and was coming directly towards me. Then it started raining and I got the hell out of there.

I went to the Galisteo Basin Preserve just outside of Santa Fe in hopes of catching a few rays of light coming through the storm clouds. At first the light was really flat, then it started to rain quite heavily, so I packed up and started to drive home when I noticed that the clouds were breaking up in the west promising a good sunset. Then the rain cloud was starting to move on. So I turned around and hurried back to the spot I was before just as the sun was setting and boy was I glad I did.

I was driving on US Hwy 84 and was basically chasing the edge of a storm which started to produce a wonderful array of light scenarios. I saw everything from rainbows to lightning to these crepuscular rays.
I didn't think much of this picture when I took it and it was one of the last ones that I processed from the entire shoot. In hindsight I wish I had bracketed the exposure to get better detail in the highlights. I also wish I had done a timelapse of the rays moving across the landscape. Oh well...
