An iPhone panorama as seen from Treasure Island. Looking southwest. San Francisco to the right, hills of Yerba Buena Island to the left. (Pardon sun flares!)
The bridge opened for business in 1936. Read more here about the bridges and the Golden Gate Int'l Exposition which built Treasure Island and celebrated the construction of the bridges.

On one hand, it's a lovely idea to think of the airport located in the bay halfway between the two cities. On the other hand--looking at what development has wrought--just imagine the traffic congestion on the bridges!, not to mention runway length and noise!
About this section of the crossing:
"The West Span lies between Yerba Buena Island and San Francisco. It is composed of two complete suspension spans connected at a center anchorage."
